Following nearly a decade in development (and pandemic-related delays), the sequel to Tony Scott’s 1986 action drama, Top Gun, arrived in theaters earlier this year. Kosinski’s Top Gun: Maverick, picks up with Cruise’s titular aviator 36 years after the events of the original film. Due to his “need for speed,” Pete “Maverick” Mitchell defies orders, destroys a prototype plane, and is subsequently sent back to TOPGUN thanks to Admiral Tom “Iceman” Kazansky (Val Kilmer). There he must train a detachment of graduates—which includes Goose’s son, Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Miles Teller)—for a dangerous mission into enemy territory.

Christopher Nolan’s next project, Oppenheimer, is different from his previous works, but it also pays off an interesting career trend and can still surprise the audience as he always does. Christopher Nolan has earned the respect and watch Bullet Train praise of critics and viewers with his signature narrative and visual style along with the themes he often addresses in his works, such as memory, time, and identity, which he has sometimes mixed with other themes, as he did with dreams in Inception back in 2010. This has led to speculation and anticipation around Nolan’s projects, and his newest work is taking his career on a slightly different route.

The intense scrutiny that every Marvel movie is now subject to isn’t allowing what Marvel does best to shine through. The fans complaining about Phase 4 being disjointed are likely the same people who would have let some of the franchise’s top and most beloved movies watch Bodies Bodies Bodies go by the wayside for not allowing them the space to breathe creatively. The most world-building that was done in the first three Phases of the MCU was the inclusion of Thanos teases throughout the series. Although thought of by many fans as all over the place, Phase 4 is actually setting up a bigger universe than any Phase before it.
