In the era of homeworking, it’s important that you are supported by a good office chair. Too many of us over the pandemic have found ourselves crouched over kitchen tables on wobbly stools, storing up spinal problems and cricking our necks.

It is estimated that 80 per cent of Americans experience of back pain at some point in their lives, with 3m years of productive life lost to the American each year because of workers having to get treatment for back pain. Americans spend $50bn on treating back pain annually, a problem which a sound ergonomic design could ease. Worse, lower back problems increase as you get older and will affect 10 per cent of the population worldwide – it’s enough to send shivers down your spine.

Best office chair

Of course, you could opt for a boring mesh chair from a furniture reseller, but your office chair could be a thing of beauty. Whether you go for a classic Eames-style EA217 or a vintage refurbished Hillcrest office chair, where you sit can be a talking point in your home office and a design statement. Retro Sixties and Seventies styles are also popular, such as the Montreal padded office chair or the simple but elegant Latimer. You could even go full steampunk with the modern Victorian of the Sterling office chair. Or, if you suffer from back pain, a state-of-the-art Herman Miller Setu ergonomic chair might be just your thing or even an iconic Swedish rocker such as the Varier Variable.

So don’t be afraid to spend money on your office chair, whether it’s for working from home or your small business office. There’s a saying in the Army that you should spend as much as you can on your mattress or your shoes, because you’re either in one or the other. To which we might add your desk chair as well.
