As global enterprises begin their transformations from selling products to providing services, enabled by IoT, Michael Cihra, the vice president of Internet of Things and Insights at TELUS, tells George Malim, the managing editor of IoT Now, how vertical industries demand specialised services from organisations that truly understand their business plus the technologies that enable IoT.

Achieving this is complex and should not be underestimated but those who can act globally and bring together partners and enable the entire ecosystem are best placed to serve the needs of the businesses of the future.

George Malim: TELUS has grown rapidly over the last few years, developing its business into new areas such as TELUS International, TELUS Health and, more recently, TELUS Agriculture. Why have you taken the approach of addressing the marketplace with specialised units?

Michael Cihra: Our roots sprout as a Canadian telecommunications services provider, but certainly over the last few years we became a leader in social capitalism, which we have as a major focus now. Our mission, really, first and foremost is about using technology, our culture and talent to enable important and meaningful outcomes, hopefully for all of our stakeholders. Our stakeholders are varied, but include our customers, communities, team members and certainly, also our investors.

Building sustainable business is an important foundation for us as we look to which markets we wish to participate in. We want to solve problems and help communities…
