NVIDIA: RTX laptops will top Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 in popularity

NVIDIA is definitely an optimist!

What you need to know

  • The Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 are next-generation consoles launching in Holiday 2020.
  • NVIDIA says that its RTX line of laptops will be more popular.
  • It's unclear if this will actually be the case because of a number of factors.
  • Many individuals or businesses may buy RTX notebooks but not use them to play games.

The Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 (PS5) are launching towards the end of the year, and it's no secret that they have AMD processors in them. It seems like NVIDIA believes that its line of RTX notebooks that feature advanced graphical options like ray tracking will be the "largest game console."

In a recent earnings call, NVIDIA boss Jensen Huang said the following. TechRadar discussed the quote in great detail.

Our notebook business... has seen double-digit growth for eight consecutive quarters and this is unquestionably a new gaming category. Like it's a new game console. This is going to be the largest game console in the world I believe. And the reason for that is because there are more people with laptops than there are of any other device... The fact that we've been able to get RTX into a thin and light notebook... is really a breakthrough. And it's one of the reasons why we're seeing such great success in notebook.

It seems like Huang is talking about popularity here, but only time will tell if RTX notebooks have more users than the Xbox Series X or PS5. With a rumored 4K Nintendo Switch coming sometime in 2021 or later, the competition for RTX notebooks will be fierce.

It'll also be interesting to see the usage statistics because many people may buy RTX laptops, but they may not use the advanced graphical features or play games on them.
