BioWare's Casey Hudson confirms 'Anthem' overhaul

Major improvements are coming to Anthem.

What you need to know

  • Anthem is a third-person action game from BioWare.
  • It garnered poor reviews at launch due to its story and technical issues.
  • BioWare has finally promised a complete overhaul of the game.
  • Anthem is part of EA Access.

Many months ago, rumors were floating around that BioWare was planning a massive overhaul of Anthem. It's no secret that the game's launch didn't go smoothly. Not only was there a convoluted and incomplete story, but the performance on consoles was terrible. Since then, the team has fixed the technical issues, but the overall problems with gameplay remain.

Casey Hudson, BioWare's General Manager, said the following in a blog post. The post appears to have been taken down since so it may have been revealed a little early. We'll keep you posted as soon as we know more.

One year ago, we were preparing to launch Anthem – a game that represented a big leap into new territory for us as a studio. It was an exhilarating and terrifying experience to go out to the world with something new and different, and we are grateful to all the players who have come along with us on the journey... Over the last year, the team has worked hard to improve stability, performance, and general quality of life while delivering three seasons of new content and features. We have also heard your feedback that Anthem needs a more satisfying loot experience, better long-term progression, and a more fulfilling endgame. So we recognize that there's still more fundamental work to be done to bring out the full potential of the experience, and it will require a more substantial reinvention than an update or expansion. Over the coming months, we will be focusing on a longer-term redesign of the experience, specifically working to reinvent the core gameplay loop with clear goals, motivating challenges and progression with meaningful rewards – while preserving the fun of flying and fighting in a vast science-fantasy setting... Creating new worlds is central to our studio mission, but it's not easy. Sometimes we get it right, sometimes we miss.

It's great to see that BioWare hasn't given up on the game like they did with Mass Effect: Andromeda. Hopefully, Anthem will be completely revamped and a joy to place once all the changes are implemented.
