Microsoft's InXile hunts software lead for 'next-gen' AAA single-player RPG #Windows

#Microsoft

inXile is one of the most exciting studios Microsoft recently acquired, and it looks like they're ready to step it up a notch for next-gen.

InXile Entertainment is an RPG-specialist led by the legendary Brian Fargo of Fallout fame. Microsoft picked the team up a couple of years ago to help grow its internal stable of game developers, addressing one of the biggest criticisms of Xbox throughout this generation.

InXile is known recently for games like Torment: Tides of Numenera and Bard's Tale IV and the team is planning to ship Wasteland 3 next year, which already looks like a big leap in quality over previous efforts from the comparatively small studio. It's looking as though the acquisition is already boosting possibilities for InXile, with new career opportunities (thanks Klobrille) that point to plans for next-gen systems.

The career posting in question is for a Lead Software Engineer, and talks about a "next-gen" AAA RPG the firm is working on. The "unannounced RPG" the studio is working on is described as a single-player experience with action elements, most likely on Unreal Engine 4.

inXile entertainment is seeking a talented and enthusiastic Lead Software Engineer to join our team on an exciting unannounced RPG project. Working with the Game Director and other project leaders, the Lead Software Engineer is responsible for creating the technical roadmap that will bring the game's vision to life.

InXile has previously noted that it's working on multiple titles alongside Wasteland 3, which is set to launch next year on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Future titles will no doubt be exclusive to Xbox and PC, alongside guaranteed day one access via Xbox Game Pass. Microsoft's next-gen console "Scarlett" will continue to have a question of game quality hanging over it, as it goes up hard against major Sony IP like The Last of Us, God of War, and beyond. There's no question, however, that Microsoft isn't investing to try and change the narrative.
