'Cats' Star Idris Elba Shares Details on His Mysterious New Role in 'The Suicide Squad'

Idris Elba may not have revealed his exact role in 2021's "The Suicide Squad", but he certainly sounds like he's having a blast since he joined the ragtag team of criminal misfits.

Amid press events for his current movie "Cats," Elba, 47, is currently filming "The Suicide Squad," a story about a group of imprisoned supervillains-turned-anti-heroes seeking redemption by fighting crime. The film falls somewhere between a reboot and a sequel to 2016's very similarly — and somewhat confusingly — named "Suicide Squad."

"I'm filming it right now as we speak, so I can't even talk about it, but I'm really excited to be a part of the squad," Elba revealed from the red carpet on Monday. "It's a great team."

It was originally rumored that Elba would slide into the role of Deadshot, filling the void left by Will Smith's departure due to scheduling conflicts. However, that role has since been cut from the film to allow for Smith's possible return to the franchise in the future. Instead, Elba will portray a different, yet-to-be-revealed character.

Though it's still unknown what role he will play in "The Suicide Squad," Elba admits that he's developed an affinity for playing the bad guy.

"Bad guys are just written better," he said on the heels of his villainous roles in this summer's "Hobbs & Shaw" and "Cats." "They're just less boring, they get to say all the stuff that's in their head, and then you get to do it with charisma."

Delving further into his role in "Cats," Elba also shared that he took on the role of Macavity in the musical film as a bit of a challenge to test his acting chops.

"I've never done a musical on film. I'm one of these actors that like to do as many different things as I can," Elba shared. "I think that's part of the job ... I just wanted to challenge myself and try something different."

Though "The Suicide Squad" won't hit theaters until 2021, fans can see Elba as the cat with one life left to live when "Cats" hits theaters on December 20.
