Stallone had broken out with Rocky prior to Superman bestowing the cape to Christopher Reeve, and his subsequent career made him one of Hollywood’s quintessential action heroes as John Rambo and Barney Ross of The Expendables franchise. Stallone’s filmography would eventually take him into stories involving superpowers and superheroism. While he entered the comic book movie pool in 1995’s Judge Dredd and later appeared as Stakar Ogord in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and King Shark in The Suicide Squad, Samaritan is an even deeper dive.
So far, the Marvel universe’s status quo has been changed more by its Phase 4 movies than previous MCU Phases. Introducing such wild concepts as gods, other planes, and the multiverse not only make this Phase of the MCU the most exciting one but they make it the broadest and most possibility-filled Phase yet. Naysayers of the MCU’s Phase 4 are missing the big picture because it has given audiences its most dramatic introductions of new plot concepts yet, even with the Phase barely halfway over.
Despite the film’s shocking cancellation, Batgirl star Leslie Grace and directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are reportedly discussing new deals with Warner Bros. Development on the DC Extended Universe film began in early 2017 when Joss Whedon, who was fresh off the heels of completing Justice League for the studio following Zack Snyder’s departure, was tapped to write, direct and produce the project, which was planned for an HBO Max release. Whedon would depart Batgirl after failing to determine its story, being replaced the following year by Birds of Prey scribe Christina Hodson, who impressed WB with her work on the Harley Quinn spinoff film and the yet-to-be-released Flash movie, and Bad Boys for Life directors Arbi and Fallah.
